Afrika Kontakt’s Zimbabwe group is a part of Afrika Kontakt (AK), which is a Danish solidarity organization formed in 1978. AK fights for systemic changes in the global system together with grassroots movements from all over the world. We believe that a more equal and just world is possible. We support social movements from the South in their fight for democracy, basic rights and a more just distribution of natural resources. We work to influence the policies in Denmark, Europe and globally, and to mobilize and inform the population of Denmark about the conditions that creates inequality and the possibilities of change.

In this respect, the Zimbabwe group manages a CISU funded project (2015-2017) in collaboration with our partner Youth Forum in Zimbabwe.

Youth Forum (YF)

Youth Forum (YF), founded in 2004, has a youth membership of almost 6000 people nationwide. The organization was formed as a response to the social exclusion of youth in political processes in Zimbabwe. The overall aim of YF is to enhance youth participation and empowerment in policy-dialogue and political decision-making. YF fights to ensure that policy makers both at the local and national level recognize, encourage and support the active roles of young people in decision-making processes. This informs why YF works to build the capacity of young people to claim their rights.

Project description

The project focuses on motivating and capacitating Youth Forum's members to hold Zimbabwe’s decision makers accountable and to realize their socioeconomic rights as presented in the 2013 constitution. Concretely, the project aims at:

  1. YF members in the three target provinces are empowered with knowledge and skills to effectively engage in decision making processes that can help them gain access to their socio-economic rights.
  2. Identify institutions and persons who are responsible for the realization of young people’s rights.
  3. Tracking and monitoring of resources, which can realize youth rights in districts, provinces and at national level.

General functions of the intern

In Denmark a group of activists supports the work of YF, and as an intern you will be working closely with this group. The recent budget cuts in the Danish development sector have put the YF-AK partnership in front of an important challenge: Redefining and strengthening the partnership to be better prepared for the unpredictable financial future and finding new work approaches, which are not dependent on external funding. A core focus of the internship lies therefore on strengthening the partnership between YF and AK, with the intern developing a critical analysis of the partners’ past and current working relationship, using these findings to define and develop sustainable work approaches to the benefit of both organizations. Additionally, the intern will assume function as a project intern assisting the local office with their daily operational tasks and project related functions.
