Natural disaster in Mozambique

State of Emergency - Solidarity with Mozambique!

The Cyclone Idai hit the shores of Mozambique on 14th of March and the consequences have been immense for the people - some classifying it as one of the worst natural disasters in the Southern Hemisphere.

As many of you know, the tropical Cyclone Idai hit Mozambique during the night of 14 to 15th March, around the city of Beira. Mozambique is one of the countries most affected by climate change in the world – and is experiencing a high level of droughts, flooding, cyclones and other natural disasters.

Idai and its consequences have caused 200 deaths, and president Nyusi expects the number to rise to 1,000. The infrastructure of Beira along with households, crops, vehicles, hospitals and schools have been destroyed, and food reserves and animals have been lost.

Our partner AAAJC has reached out to us for solidarity in this time of emergency.
AAAJC primarily works in the Tete province, which was not directly hit, but the neighbouring provinces of Sofala, Manica and Zambézia, which are areas where AAAJC has several projects through strategic partnerships, were severely affected by the Cyclone.
Tete was, though, indirectly hit as the cyclone has brought about extreme winds and flooding in many areas of the country, where river basins’ water levels have increased significantly.

Afrika Kontakt is collaborating with our partners and friends in Mozambique to get some donations to the poor people affected by the disasters. We are in contact with UNAC in order to support the peasantry and especially focusing on women with our partner Forum Mulher.

We urge everybody to give a small contribution to people in need in Mozambique.

Any amount will make a difference!
